A Mountaineer and Wilderness Medic, I am no stranger to extreme conditions having been to some of the world's most remote locations, including the Arctic, Central America, Indonesia, and the Himalayas. Oh Yes, I do like a good challenge. My latest one however does not involve mountains, and there is probably not much in the way of wilderness either, but it does involve quite a bit of stamina and shall test my outdoor skills. The Challenge is called Another Long Way Down, but as yet has nothing to do with Ewan McGregor or Charley Boorman. To find out more go to Latest News. I have also got another challenge, although this one is not the sort that I usually plan. I am no longer part of the big corporate picture. No more collar and tie for me, those days are gone. I’m going to concentrate on doing what I want to do. So if anyone is planning an expedition to outer Mongolia, the Antarctic, or the dark side of the moon, and need a medic to go with them, then I’m your man. I volunteer for St John Ambulance, and most of my spare time goes to South Central Ambulance Service as a coordinator for Community First Responders. I now teach First Aid including AED and Paediatric and can advise on various topics, such as how to avoid things like Delhi Belly and Malaria when your travelling. The Priory of England and the Islands of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, (try saying that quick), presented me with a certificate for Meritorious Service Rendered. I have received a Commendation from South Central Ambulance Service, and I’ve even got a lump of crystal on a shelf in my living room, from the people of Reading. The best award I have received so far is something I got a couple of years ago. It was knowing that two young girls still had a Dad and that a woman still had her partner that Christmas, because I knew what to do when he had an accident. Read about that story on my First Aid page. |
